Vex (SE) + Göteborgselektronikerna (SE)
Overview:
Klubb Död (Stockholm) collaborates with PlusOne (Gothenburg) and proudly presents a packed night of two contemporary amazing postpunk acts from Sweden; Vex and support act Göteborgselektronikerna.
About the artists:
VEX - Tobias, Frida and Jonas play punky synth-pop with the energy at the max and a twinkle in their eye. Jonas usually plays in Cat Rapes Dog but is now also the guitarist in Vex. Tobias Kastberg started his journey as a solo artist in 2019 after being the guitarist in the electropunk duo The Guilt. He chose to leave the band to focus on his own project. His debut album, “Average minds think alike” (2021), was well received and was awarded the Synthsläggan 2022 award by the two popular Swedish synth podcasts Radio Virus and Blå Måndag. The music is characterized by electronic, melodic and playful post-punk dance songs. Tobias Kastberg has an ambition to create uplifting pop choruses with a punk attitude. He draws inspiration from different musical eras, including 70s punk bands, 80s synth-pop such as Bronski Beat and Pete Shelley, as well as 90s house and contemporary electronic groups. The result is a modern interpretation of a retro sound, reminiscent of an angry Pete Shelley or Devo, produced by Mr. Oizo. The lyrics mix humor with attitude and explore themes of alienation, often with an uplifting or light-hearted tone. Vex embraces the odd and strange, which gives the music a unique character. In Sweden, Vex's yellow spectacle has played at, for example, Kalabalik på Tyrolen, as an opening act for S.P.O.C.K, Psyche, Elegant Machinery and others. They have also played at Göteborgsvarvet with Göteborgselektronikerna. Now Vex is teaming up with Göteborgselektronikerna again to show how best to hit yourself in the head with a grater and dance with flyswatters.
GÖTEBORGSELEKTRONIKERNA - Göteborgselektronikerna is a synth quartet with a base in Gothenburg. With a great love for synthesizers and music machines, they make music that likes to mix the genre's classic expressions with the simple and everyday. Strong melodies are topped with vocoder-embellished lyrics about everything from public transport, youth parties and relationships to rainy days with the children on the playground. Live, everything is played live and the sounds are turned up in the moment to find new expressions. Their debut album “Nattrafik” (2016) was a tribute to their hometown of Gothenburg and was received with praise from critics. With themes that explore different aspects of the port city, including the hit single “Hållplatz” which follows tram 11 through the city’s streets, the band combines classic influences from artists like Kraftwerk and Daft Punk with the city’s liveliness at all hours of the day. In 2022, they released the follow-up “Retrospektif”. Just like in “Nattrafik”, the album begins and ends with a love of synthesizers and electronic instruments, but this time the lyrics are directed more inward. Instead of a tram ride, the listener is taken on a life journey that touches on relationships, childhood, partying and dancing, and the unchanging love of music creation. The characteristic, bouncy bass and the simple but beautiful melodies are still there, but the soundscape has also evolved and now offers even more sweeping, sparkling and whistling synths. The album “Retrospektif” was recorded in 2020 and 2021 and mixed and mastered by Hans Olsson (Kite, José Gonzáles, Universal Poplab, Timo Räisinen) at the Svenska Grammofonstudion in Gothenburg.
